Staff

Ralph Smallwood is our Director/Woodworking Instructor and has 34 years of experience. He taught in the woodworking program at BTC before joining the Home Port Learning Center.  He has dedicated the past 21 years to teaching, mentoring, and improving the lives of at-risk youth at Home Port.  Ralph has a Washington State Teaching Certificate in Technology Education and a B.A. in Vocational Education.

 

Mike Baker is our Maritime Education/Math/English/PE Teacher.   Mike has his B.A. in history and is a Washington State Certified Teacher.  He has 22 years of experience teaching at-risk youth.  In addition, he spent 7 years as a commercial fisherman and 6 years as a commercial boat builder.  Mike also has a 100 ton USCG Master’s License for sail and motor vessels. Mike is a water sport enthusiast and can be found canoeing and kayaking whitewater on the weekends.

Amy Marchegiani  is our Art, Science, Life Skills, & P.E. Teacher.  Amy has her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Washington State University and her Masters in Teaching from Western Washington University.  Amy is a Washington State Certified Teacher and has 5 years of experience as a fine artist and 18 years as a graphic designer/illustrator.  Amy’s dog Pele often joins us for classes and is well loved by the students.

Doreen Richmond is our part -time Special Education Teacher. She has over 20 years experience teaching in the public schools and is also currently teaching at Whatcom Community College in the Transitional Learning Department. She has a BA in Special Education, BS in Environmental Studies, her MA in Consultative Teaching and is National Board Certified in Special Education. She loves to work with diverse populations of students and enjoys traveling and exploring the world in her free time.

Jane Pless is our office manager. She has a BA in psychology from Seattle Pacific University.  Jane’s teaching credential was earned at Chapman University and a M. Ed. Degree in Education from Western Washington University.  She is a former teacher at Home Port.
